Mental Health

Mental health is concurrently addressed within the clinical and religious settings, each with their own methods and understandings. Further research is required within the practical and spiritual settings on how mental health diagnoses can be better understood and how communities can be supported to address these challenges. Some of the themes explored may include:

  • Definitions within mental health
  • The intersection of physical, psychological and spiritual health
  • What are the criteria for mental capacity within Muslim law? Can patients ever be treated against their will?
  • How have Muslim scholars treated the different faculties of mind and soul in the past? Are these classifications outdated?
