Death and Dying

The medical profession’s ability to prolong life and support vital organ function raises complex questions about the definition and process of dying, the physician’s role and the patient and their family’s preferences.

The following questions will be explored in this theme:

  • Which of the prevalent medical definitions of death can Muslims accept?
  • Is it always necessary to seek and provide medical treatment? When is it appropriate to withdraw life support?
  • Are ‘Do Not Attempt Resuscitation’ and ‘Advance Directive’s’ valid legal documents compatible with Islamic law?
  • Can physician assisted suicide or euthanasia be justified from a religious perspective?
